UCHSK Students' Journey

'Journey' is an art exhibition created by indigenous students from UCHSK through BCS's Bungee Program. The exhibition explores young men's identity represented by wood carvings and masks and runs for a week, from December 13th until the 20th at BCS Kippax.

Cody, Nathaniel, Tre, Dayne and Troy have spent the last 9 weeks creating and preparing for the opening of this exhibition. They’re understandably excited by the event and would be delighted to see as many friends, family and teachers at the opening.
'Journey' officially opens at 5.30pm on Tuesday the 13th, with light refreshments available. Please RSVP to bungee@bcsact.com.au or by calling 62640200 by the end of today.

UCHSK is very proud of our young men and the way they have explored these personal themes through creative expression!

The Great Book Swap

Indigenous Literacy Day is Wednesday, the 7th of September, so to mark this next week (Week 8) UCHSK will be participating in the Great Book Swap which celebrates reading and raises much needed funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
Students and staff can bring a book (or books) they no longer want and swap it for another book/books that someone else has brought in. A gold coin donation is requested to participate, which goes to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Any leftover books from the UCHSK Book Swap will be donated to Lifeline.

NAIDOC Week Celebration Workshop

As part of NAIDOC Week celebrations, Mr Issa organised for students to run a Dot Art workshop. All 25 places in the workshop were filled, with Mr Issa having to turn students away. The level of interest was enormous as Malik, Carly and Kirra showed their classmates their skills and worked with them to create their own pieces.
Students will return tomorrow afternoon to finish their work and learn more about the techniques and stories behind the use of Dot Art. Malik, Carly and Kirra all did an amazing job managing the workshop and engaging students in the session as well as sharing a part of their culture and themselves with their school community.

Well-Deserved Rewards

Every semester, Ms O'Rourke rewards Year 7 students who average above 95% on their Hiragana reading and writing tests. This is a hard result to achieve, but 5 students (Kolya, Richard, Ben, Mikayla and Ryan) got it this semester and a few more were just off winning a prize. These students are enjoying Japanese foods as a reward for their excellent results.
Good job to the whole class as well for their tireless, hard work.

Cross Kids!

See that tiny speck speeding through the middle of this picture? That would be Kolya from Year 7, coming in 6th place in the 12 years Boys ACT Cross Country Championships!

After a number of postponements due to the crazy rainy weather, we were finally able to get our team of Kolya, Dean, Joel, Bec and Hayley, over to Stromlo Park where they all performed very well. Well done, Peeps!

UCHSK Post Open Night

We had a wonderful turn out for our 2016 Open Night; staff and students alike were kept on their toes showing families around and demonstrating what we do here at UCHSK. As you can see, we have a pretty impressive bunch that we like to show off. If you contributed to our very successful evening, thank you very much for your participation...and if you came to check us out, thank you too and we hope you enjoyed your walk around and getting to know us. If you are enrolling a student for year 7 next year, you can find the online enrolment here on the Department website.

Welcome to the new UCHSK Board

The UCHSK Community would like to extend a great big welcome to the new members of the UCHSK Board. Our incoming members, (parent Janelle Kennard, students Lauren Riddle and Ella Frampton, and staff members Janet Richardson and Cameron Major) will join our existing members and parents Frances Gibson and Board Chairperson Michael Hicks, in the heavy duty business of running our school.

Furthermore, we would like to wholeheartedly thank our outgoing members for all their support and hard work over the last couple of years. Your contribution is greatly appreciated!

Soldier On Sausage Sizzle

Ella Frampton, in Year 8, took it upon herself to organise a fundraising day to raise money for Soldier On, an organisation whose mission is to support our returned service-men and women reintegrate and recover once they come back from duty.

Casual dress day was clearly popular amongst the students, and the sausage sizzle had a satisfyingly long line helped by the sun disappearing behind clouds right before lunch started.
Ella's goal was to raise $600, which would provide the services of three psychologists, a fundamentally important part of the organisation. After all the hard work she has done organising, advertising, collecting and cooking, Ella looks to have a long night ahead of her counting the coins - but you can't keep a good kid down! Well done Ella and thanks for the feed!

UCHSK Students in Glass Fusion Program

Richard Whitely, Head of the Glass Workshop at Canberra School of Art and an amazing internationally renowned Glass artist, came to UCHSK last week with his assistant Rose and delivered a Glass Fusion program with Year 10 students as part of the SOA Outreach Program.

In this workshop students viewed works of art by contemporary glass artists, exploring the range of processes artists use to generate their works.  Under Richard and Rose's guidance, they then worked with recycled coloured glass and fibre mat to prepare a glasswork for the kiln.

Richard started his journey with glass when he became an apprentice in a stained glass work-shop at the age of 16, giving him a valuable insight into working with students in such an unusual and delicate medium.

In the course of the workshop it turned out that some students had actually used a very precious glass which contains gold particle, turning aspects of the finished designs a purple hue.

Fusing took place back in the Glass workshop and the finished objects were returned to the students last Monday. As the photographs show, students produced spectacular pieces and really enjoyed the opportunity to explore their creativity. Opportunities such as these are great and rare; they teach our students so much through the use of different mediums, tools and equipment and enhance their sense of what amazing things they can achieve.

UCHSK Student to Shave for a Cure

UCHSK's Isabelle in Year 9 will be participating in the Leukaemia Foundation's World's Greatest Shave next month, going crazy on her luscious locks to raise money for the Shave for a Cure fundraiser.
Isabelle thinks it is a great cause, and with her Nanna recently receiving a diagnosis of cancer, feels super strongly about doing what she can to help. Isabelle is shaving all of her hair off next month, as she says "It'll grow back!". You can donate to Isabelle at any time now and even after she lops it off by clicking on the link: https://goo.gl/u9fVqV
Go Issy, we're very proud of you!

First Prize!

We were very proud to discover that UCHSK Year 10 student, Hayley, won the ActewAGL 2016 Canberra Show Art Section for the 13 -17 year age category. This outstanding portrait was done last year as part of Hayley's UCAN Excel project, and is a fabulous example of what students can achieve in this program. Fantastic work, Hayley!

Black Summer Spins on Saturday!

One of our Year 7 students, Rhys, also goes by a different name. Black Summer is Rhys's stage name when he is spinning decks. The spotlight hit Rhys when he uploaded some of his work on Triple J's Unearthed in February last year, and he hit headlines with his debut gig at music festival: Groovin' the Moo in May 2015.

Rhys is a year older and bolder now, he's played a bunch of venues and will be working on a TV shoot for a commercial this Saturday at the Academy, in Bunda St, Civic from approx 1pm to 4pm. This a great opportunity for Rhys that he'd like to share with his UCHSK community, so if students would like to watch the commercial being made, Rhys and his family would love the support as he continues on his Black Summer journey!

New Kids!

You might have heard about all the new kids we have? No?

We have 8 new kids - can you believe it?  No?

What this what you were thinking?
Pretty cute, right?

Turns out - we also have a bunch of the two legged type of kids new to UCHSK too...and if any of our new two legged kids are keen to help out on our farm with the feathery and furry kids, please see Ms Richardson!
