Health and PE Week

Next week is Health and PE Week! The nationwide event is designed to raise awareness of the value of Health and PE in the Australian Curriculum, and highlight the important role these subjects play in the learning and development of children.The benefit and educative value of Health and PE to schools and the wider community is immeasurable.

Throughout the week next week, UCHSK will be doing activities such as staff v students Futsal games and on Health and PE Day (Wednesday the 14th September) staff and students are invited to dress in their favourite sporting attire - or sport team attire.

 Mr Wylie is a dark horse, not only is he our Literacy Field Officer, he also happens to have a talent for boxing. Mr Wylie very kindly volunteered his time and expertise to lead a boxing coaching session for Miss Fisher's Sports Coaching Class, teaching the students technique and the importance of fast footwork.

Cross Kids!

See that tiny speck speeding through the middle of this picture? That would be Kolya from Year 7, coming in 6th place in the 12 years Boys ACT Cross Country Championships!

After a number of postponements due to the crazy rainy weather, we were finally able to get our team of Kolya, Dean, Joel, Bec and Hayley, over to Stromlo Park where they all performed very well. Well done, Peeps!

UCHSK Sportstar!

Congratulations to UCHSK Year 9 student, Geeta, who has been selected for the ACT 18 & Under Tennis Team. They head to Albury to compete in a week long tournament against the others states and NT this Saturday 30^th April – Sunday 8^th May. Well done, Geeta, we're very proud!

New Date for Cross Country

So, it turns out I don't always know what I'm talking about - who knew? Thanks, you can all put your hands down now... Our latest newsletter has the wrong date for the UCHSK Cross Country event in its calendar but we won't dwell on it, the correct date is Wednesday 4th of May - which falls in Week 2 of Term 2. The UCHSK Cross Country event is always a very pleasant one, falling in a beautiful time of year, with the autumn colours and the mild weather - definitely one the students (and the staff) enjoy...as long as every one turns up on the right date (ahem).

ACT Athletics

UCHSK was very fortunate to have four students make it through to the ACT 13 years & Over Athletics Championships, held earlier in the week in 30 degree heat at the AIS Track and Field.

Year 9 students Kira Williams and Hayley Steel both ran in the 15 years, 400m race, Acacia Argento, also in Year 9, ran in the 15 years, 200m race and Xavier Nader in Year 7 competed in the 13 years Shot Put event.

We are very proud of these students for representing us at the ACT Competition and even more so for surviving the crazy heat whilst competing!  Well done, guys!

Ben Donohoe and the Red Wig Run

After ten years of commemorating and celebrating their son, Ben, with The Ben Donohoe Run and Walk for Fun (known to all of us who have lived in the Canberra Community in that time), last year the Donohoe Family made the difficult decision to bring the annual run to an end on this milestone.

Ben's mum, Robyn, has expressed her great thanks for the participation and support from the community over this decade, and wants to let people know that the family do want to continue to help others and honour Ben's legacy by joining the Red Wig Run committee to help Ronald McDonald House Canberra organise and promote their own events.

Robyn says that Ronald McDonald House was their home away from home when their beautiful boy was so unwell, and the family has felt strongly about giving back in any way they could.  This has meant that Ronald McDonald House Canberra has been one of their chosen beneficiaries over the last three years of the Ben Donohoe Run and Walk for Fun, with them being able to present the House with a $20,000 cheque last year alone.

Robyn hopes to see the wonderful support from the community continue so that other families in need are able to benefit from this care, and encourages families and groups who participated annually in Ben's Run and Walk for Fun, to join in the red wig fun.

UCHSK Basketball Stars

To qualify for the NSW State Cup Basketball competition, UCHSK Year 9 student Bec Haisman's Canberra team had to win their regional competition which involved three weekends of games covering Southern NSW ( Albury, Wollongong, South Coast and Wagga) before a fourth weekend for the Finals. Bec's team beat fellow UCHSK student Zoe Kershaw's team in the Semis but Zoe's team then narrowly beat Bec's in the Grand Final and as a result a combined team was sent to the State Cup. 
They had to win all 3 pool games against the top teams from the other regions across NSW, including metropolitan teams, to make the Grand Final. The Grand Final was against Bathurst and took 1 hour and 40 minutes but they got up by two points in a very exciting game and won the NSW State Cup.  Well done!

UCHSK Equestrienne

The Interschools Equestrian Championships attracts student riders from a mix of private and public schools across the ACT region.  This year, we were very proud to have a participant - our team of one, Kira Williams in year 9, represented UCHSK with her horse, Delilah, a very polite bay who stands at 14 hh.

Luckily, despite the recent winter weather, the event was held on a beautiful day, with little wind and lots of sun.  Kira reports she enjoyed the event very much and looks forward to participating again next year.  Kira and Delilah did very well at their first Interschool Equestrian event, with horse and rider winning a first for Most Suitable Mount where Kira was required to ride with a long relaxed rein and guide her horse to walk, trot and canter using body signals with little to no use of hand signals.

If other students with horses would like to participate in future events, we suggest they have a chat with Mr Stirling to be involved in an excellent competition day.
