New Date for Cross Country

So, it turns out I don't always know what I'm talking about - who knew? Thanks, you can all put your hands down now... Our latest newsletter has the wrong date for the UCHSK Cross Country event in its calendar but we won't dwell on it, the correct date is Wednesday 4th of May - which falls in Week 2 of Term 2. The UCHSK Cross Country event is always a very pleasant one, falling in a beautiful time of year, with the autumn colours and the mild weather - definitely one the students (and the staff) enjoy...as long as every one turns up on the right date (ahem).

UCHSK Students in Glass Fusion Program

Richard Whitely, Head of the Glass Workshop at Canberra School of Art and an amazing internationally renowned Glass artist, came to UCHSK last week with his assistant Rose and delivered a Glass Fusion program with Year 10 students as part of the SOA Outreach Program.

 

In this workshop students viewed works of art by contemporary glass artists, exploring the range of processes artists use to generate their works.  Under Richard and Rose's guidance, they then worked with recycled coloured glass and fibre mat to prepare a glasswork for the kiln. 

 

Richard started his journey with glass when he became an apprentice in a stained glass work-shop at the age of 16, giving him a valuable insight into working with students in such an unusual and delicate medium.

 

In the course of the workshop it turned out that some students had actually used a very precious glass which contains gold particle, turning aspects of the finished designs a purple hue.

 

 

 

 

Fusing took place back in the Glass workshop and the finished objects were returned to the students last Monday. As the photographs show, students produced spectacular pieces and really enjoyed the opportunity to explore their creativity. Opportunities such as these are great and rare; they teach our students so much through the use of different mediums, tools and equipment and enhance their sense of what amazing things they can achieve.

 

UCHSK Yr 7 Camp

Our Yr 7 Campers return home today (in fact the bus has just pulled up). Here's how they all looked setting off bright and early Monday morning:

2015 UCHSK Japan Trip

Stories from the 2015 UCHSK Japan Trip have been rolling in since we returned from school holidays this week - and it sounds like students had a fantastic time trying out their language skills, the food and the different culture.  Ms Lovell also made a Blog for the trip which you can find here.  The photos on this page were by student Nick Heerdegen and show, not just his excellent photographic eye, but also some of the amazing architecture of the places the students visited.

Term 3 in Review

Lifeline Bookfair Mini Excursion

Last year Ms Siemionow came up with the brilliant plan to take some of our keenest readers to the Lifeline Bookfair to spend some of the Library Trust Fund on student selected texts for the UCHSK Library.  The four students managed to pick up 61 books for our library for $200!

This proved to be a highly successful trip and has consequently expanded to include 12 kids, 3 teachers and Cathy our lovely Library Lady and hopefully the UCHSK blogger.

Our UCHSK group will be going next Friday to the first of the three day Bookfair, and by rewarding our biggest book fans, we will also be topping up our library with student favorited books at a bargain price AND donating much needed funds to Lifeline Canberra's Crisis Support service - it's a win - win - win all round!

As an added bonus, students and staff of course will have an opportunity to bring and spend their own money to increase their own personal libraries which is why I must go I will endeavor to capture for a future blog.... The Lifeline Bookfair is open to the public from 9am to 6pm Friday 18th September, 9am to 5pm Saturday 19th September, and 10am to 4pm Sunday 20th September....I am certain to See you there!

UCHSK Friday Wrap Up

Debating students from Years 9 and 10 have done very well according to Mr Issa - he's super proud of them, and I'm still waiting to hear the controversial outcome of our two teams voting against each other!

All kids have been working really hard for Limelight and the performance is really coming together. This week they’ve been to and from AIS for practice rehearsals, getting more polished with each run through.  Today the students had an all-day rehearsal in preparation for their big night tonight. 

Tim Minchin's musical Matilda opened this week, we have a group of students and parents who are going up to see it next Wednesday with Ms Van Galen.

Canberra Careers Expo

UCHSK Year 9 and 10 students will be joining senior students from all Canberra schools to go and see the Canberra Careers Expo in Week 2 of next term.  It's an excellent annual event, that gets the students to start thinking about the many options available to them.  See below, for more information - there are some events held outside of the school excursion time, and have a chat with your Year 9/10 student about what they're interested in seeing.

Small Business and Entrepreneurs Hub
The Hub will run from 5.00pm to 7.00pm on Wednesday 29 July in the Freycinet Room. Guest presenters include Louise Curtis, the founder and CEO of Lollypotz, and Chris Hansen, creator and Managing Director of Likeajob.com.au.

WorldSkills Australia’s Try’aSkill
Try’aSkill will feature hairdressing and beauty therapy, fitness, surveying and mapping, automotive, horticulture, forensics, baking, bookkeeping, first aid, aged care, business technology services and hospitality.

Planning Future Pathways Expo
The Expo, for students with disability will be held on Wednesday from 9.30am to 2.30pm and 4.30pm to 7.00pm.
