Over 40% of homeless people in the ACT are under the age of 25 - yes Canberra - where we have the second highest rate of homelessness in Australia.
Did that shock you? Every night in Canberra there are around 466 young people without a home or a safe place to sleep.
So on August 8th, Fusion Canberra is partnering with the Civic based MissionHeart/MissionWorx to run the Sleep In Your Car initiative to raise awareness and funds to support programs for those in crises as well as preventative programs for young people.
Brenton from Fusion is looking for more people who want to sign up to lend a hand. The official event is being held at Canberra College in Phillip, but people can do it from anywhere - last year there was a volunteer from China...but many others just snuggle up in their cars at home.
The sleep-out coincides with Homeless Prevention Week (August 3rd - 9th) so running the event in our Canberra winter gives participants and sponsors a good appreciation of what 1 in 200 people in Australia experience every night. Participants under the age of 18 are asked to aim to raise $50 and registered adults, $100. Sleep In Your Car will be run consecutively in 9 cities around Australia; if you would like more information on this initiative or to register to participate, or even to sponsor someone else who will be spending the night in their car, please go to this link or check out the article in this weeks Canberra Chronicle.
All enquiries to Brenton are appreciated.
