Local Author Visit

This morning, we were very lucky to have Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge Ambassador Jack Heath to UCHSK talking to us about his writing career and his passion for books and reading.

Jack Heath is a Canberra author, and was taught by three of our UCHSK teachers during his schooling (including our illustrious leader Denis Dickinson) who would all like to take credit for his talent.  Jack had the students thoroughly engaged with his anecdotes, advice and readings and left us on a cliff-hanger from his soon-to-be-released book ‘Cut Out’ (due out in bookshops in the next few months).

Jack’s books are popular in our school library and the man himself proved very popular with his audience today. Keep an eye out for more of his publications, as he has a long, busy writing career ahead of him.

Five Facts on Reading for all ages from Jack Heath:
  1. Six minutes of reading can reduce stress by up to 68%. Great for plane trips—just ask Jack!
  2. Regular reading makes you up to 2.5 times less likely to develop Alzheimer’s.
  3. Reading fiction improves empathy and can help you overcome prejudice.
  4. Reading hacks your brain by increasing vocabulary, which improves memory, concentration, speech and listening skills.
  5. Books excite all the senses: reading words like “lavender” and "cinnamon" activates the olfactory cortex in your brain, for example.
